Effective Ways to Manage Diabetes: The Importance of Self-Education to Prevent Foot Wounds

Diabetes mellitus is one of the chronic diseases affecting a large portion of the Indonesian population. One of the severe complications of diabetes is foot ulcers, which can lead to amputation if not treated early. Early intervention, such as through the Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) program, can help prevent ulcers and other complications. This article will review the effectiveness of DSME in preventing foot ulcers in diabetes patients, based on research conducted by Universitas Airlangga.

The Importance of Self-Management Education for Diabetes Patients

The DSME program aims to educate patients on how to manage their disease independently. This education includes information on diet, physical activity, medication use, and regular blood sugar monitoring. According to research, DSME has proven effective in improving patients’ knowledge and skills in self-care, directly preventing foot ulcers.

Methods and Research Findings

This study involved several diabetes patients participating in the DSME program. After a period of time, the researchers evaluated the patients’ foot conditions to observe any ulceration. The results showed that patients who followed the DSME program were more capable of maintaining foot health, with a significant reduction in ulcer cases. Additionally, the patients’ quality of life improved as they became more confident in managing their diabetes.

Factors Supporting the Success of DSME

The success of DSME in preventing diabetic foot ulcers is influenced by several factors, including:

  1. Consistency in Following the Program: Patients who consistently participated in the DSME program showed better results in preventing diabetes complications.
  2. Family Involvement: Family support is crucial. Patients who received help from family members in managing their diet and physical activities were more successful in controlling their diabetes.
  3. Supportive Healthcare Facilities: The availability of trained healthcare providers and supportive facilities, such as diabetes clinics, plays a significant role in the success of DSME.

Conclusion

Self-management education through the DSME program has proven effective in preventing foot ulcers in diabetes patients. With proper education, patients can manage their condition more independently, reducing the risk of complications and improving their quality of life. For healthcare professionals, it is essential to continue developing DSME programs and ensuring adequate support for patients.
